3rd Grade Spring Concert!

FIELD TRIP FUN!
We had a wonderful time at the Seattle Children's Theater watching the play, Robin Hood. The actors did such a great job making the play entertaining for both the kids and adults. We lucked out with a gorgeous day and enjoyed eating lunch at the park with a nice view of the Space Needle! Thanks to our chaperones for coming with us!

Investigation 1: Part 1: Students explored the movement in their bones and bodies by recording observations of their partner jump roping! A few discoveries:
When we jump: knees bend, breath gets heavy, wrists turn, ankles move, elbows bend. JOINTS allow us to jump rope and do all other movements! These kids are great scientists and note takers!

Next, kids worked in pairs to try to put the Mr. Bones puzzle together! There was a lot of trial and error, but I think we have the names and locations of the bones down now! I especially loved seeing their Mr. Bones posters in action!

OWL PELLETS!
We learned that owl pellets are made of fur, bones, claws, and teeth of animals! The pellets are parts that the owl cannot digest after he swallows his prey whole. These brave kiddos dug right into the pellets to discover what bones/animal their owl had swallowed. Students identified rodents, and a few even found what looked like frog feet in their pellet! I hope you enjoyed the bones that were sent home in each child's backpack :).

Be My Valentine
Thank you so much to the parents who came to help at our class Valentine's party. The kids had a wonderful time making bookmarks, decorating cookies, and exchanging Valentines.

HERITAGE PRESENTATIONS
I was beyond impressed with the amount of work my students put into researching their heritage this year! Not only did they learn A LOT of neat information about their background, they were also SO excited to present! We had a variety of creative projects such as poster boards, Power Point presentations, dolls, dioramas, and more! The students shared great facts, and as an audience they did a nice job listening, complimenting one another, and asking questions. Below are a few shots I captured during presentations. Way to go, third graders!

Home of Hearts
This week several classes at Somerset participated in a project where students create Valentine's for our local Senior Citizens. I am so impressed with the compassion that these kids have for others. They were so excited to brighten a strangers day by writing kind and thoughtful words in their Valentines. They were also so amazed at the many things that they had in common with their Senior. Many students even did the math to discover how old their pen pal was :). The cards will be delivered this week. Some are wishing for a letter in return. How sweet!

STAR STUDENT
Our Star Student ANDREW did a wonderful job presenting about marine animals! We were so impressed with all of the interesting facts he shared. It made me want to take an adventure to the Seattle Aquarium!

SCIENCE MEASUREMENT! The class did an awesome job on their soda can investigation! Students set out to discover whether the label on the soda can was referring to the volume of soda in the can, or the capacity that the can holds. After careful measurements and documenting data, students determined that the 355mL label refers to the volume of soda that comes in the can when we buy it. Also ask your child about measuring temperature! Up next: STEM!

TOY MAKER!
On Friday, December 19th, Rick Hartman ("The Toy Maker") came to our school to lead the kids in building toys! What a fun way to wrap up the week before Winter Break! The toys that the kids made were directly related to our recently completed science unit, Motion and Matter. Our third graders were tested on their new knowledge about magnets and forces while creating fun and educational toys...all before the holiday season!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Anastasia, Bella, and Sofia enjoying activities during our holiday party.

DO YOU WANT TO BUILD A 12TH MAN!?
Check out our classroom door! For the Somerset winter door decorating contest, these third graders of course would choose to create a door that is a mix between Frozen and the Seahawks! If you zoom in real close you can see 24 cute kids hard at work building their 12th man! We are really proud and excited about our door and love the festive feel it adds to the hallways. Come and see ours, along with all of the other fabulous and festive doors around Somerset!

HOUR OF CODE
On Tuesday, December 10th, Room 208 participated in the Hour of Code. The kids had a fun time learning about coding and all of the exciting jobs that involve coding each day! Click here to learn more about the Hour of Code. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC5FbmsH4fw

ENGINEERS AT WORK!

Our class has been having so much fun with our new Motion and Matter science unit. In the past few weeks students worked to design carts that could effectively roll from one place to another. We focused on questions such as: How can you improve the design of your cart? How does the start position affect how far your cart rolls off a ramp? How can you make your carts do tricks with magnets?

Students worked together to build carts, solve problems, and come up with solutions to successfully complete each experiment. Below are a few pictures of our young scientists in action!

Time to race! Whose cart traveled the furthest?

A HAPPY HALLOWEEN IN ROOM 208!

 Spider making!
I loved all of the creative costumes! What a fun party!

WORKING AND LEARNING IN PAIRS

Using text and graphic features to learn new information in Time for Kids!

More science fun! Answering focus questions in our science notebooks.

SCIENCE! Kids having a fun time exploring the interaction between magnets and paper clips.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Learning about the physical geography, natural resources, and climate of four different places in the United States! The students did a fantastic job working together to gather information from the text, and create 'brochure' posters to share their learning.

READING BUDDIES!
Our third graders were SO excited to be the 'bigger reading buddy' and become leaders to our new Kindergarten friends in Mrs. Ayers class. The class talked about ways they could not only be reading role models, but also set great examples at recess or lunch since we share both with our buddies! The third graders and kindergarteners made quick friends and we had an awesome time getting to know our year-long buddies on Friday! We can't wait for more fun reading adventures to come.

The kindergarteners adored our class...and we felt the same about them!
Pointing to words and pictures to help our buddies become readers.

Quickly warming up to our sweet new friends...I'm so proud of our third grade leaders!

After spending 3 weeks learning about the Daily 5, kids are beginning rotations and practicing a variety of reading and writing skills throughout our reading block! The daily 5 'choices' include read to self, read to someone, word work, listen to reading, and work on writing. The class is doing a fantastic job building stamina reading and writing stamina, navigating through tumblebooks and spelling city, and participating in book clubs at their interest and reading level. It is so fun to watch the kids become independent learners and to see their excitement and love for reading! I especially love the fact that I am able to successfully meet with small reading groups and listen to students practice fluency and participate in book talk!

Sabrina is nice and cozy as she reads her IPICK book.

Kids exploring the 'listen to reading' station as the choose books on Tumblebooks and take the tumble 'quiz' to test their listening comprehension.

My favorite time! I love reading with groups and listening to the kids engaged in book talk!

Gavin is enjoying 'working on writing' and building his writing stamina. Way to go!

  1. This is a great idea having the class blog, so that we can see kids having fun in the school. Thank you very much, Mrs. Teasley.
